Leaving Japan? How to Sell Your Belongings Before You Move

Updated: 2026-07-13

When you leave Japan, everything you own becomes a decision. Shipping is expensive, and throwing things away is not free either β€” bulky items require paid disposal stickers and booked pickups. The good news: Japan's second-hand market is deep, and almost everything you own can be turned into cash if you start early enough.

The golden rule: start one month out

The most common mistake is leaving everything until the final week, when you have no negotiating power and end up paying for disposal instead of getting paid. A rough timeline:

  • 4 weeks before: sell the car (paperwork takes time β€” see our car-selling guide) and list valuable items on Mercari while there is still time for them to sell.
  • 2–3 weeks before: take watches, jewelry, cameras and gadgets to buyback shops. Check rough values first: watches, gold & jewelry, phones, game consoles, camping gear.
  • 1–2 weeks before: furniture and appliances. Reuse chains like 2nd STREET and Treasure Factory offer shuchō kaitori (出弡買取) β€” they come to your apartment, quote on the spot, and haul items away. One visit can clear half your apartment.
  • Final week: sayonara-sale the rest through community groups (Facebook "Sayonara Sale" groups, Mottainai Japan and similar), where "free if you pick it up today" solves problems money can't.

What sells and what doesn't

Sells well: brand-name anything, appliances under 5 years old, gaming hardware, quality furniture (Muji, Karimoku), outdoor gear, bicycles. Hard to sell: no-brand furniture, old CRT-era electronics, used bedding, and appliances over ~7 years old β€” many shops refuse these, so plan disposal for them early.

Practical notes for the final stretch

  • Shops require your residence card for any buyback β€” sell while it is still valid, not after your resignation date passes.
  • Bank transfers for larger buyouts need a working Japanese bank account β€” don't close it until all payments have landed.
  • Book sodai gomi (bulky waste) pickups for unsellable items at least a week ahead; slots fill up at the end of the month, exactly when everyone else is moving too.

Sold early and systematically, a typical apartment's contents can cover a meaningful chunk of your moving costs β€” and you leave without a mountain of disposal fees on your last day.
